Get your minds out of the gutter; it’s not that type of party. No, I didn’t sneak off to Brazil for a secret liaison with some hot Latin guy. Oh no…it was much better and well worth the trip.
Last summer, I spent two weeks in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Having lived around the globe, I was feel pretty confident about my first trip to Brazil, and I most say I loved the sights and sounds, the laid back attitude and the killer shopping (I’m a high-heel sorta gal). Our hotel was awesome and most of the staff spoke English which was great seeing that my French and limited German were no match for their Portuguese.
Brazilians are outdoors kind of people so in the evenings the park across the street from our dwellings would fill up with people of all ages. I decide to join in the fun.
Holy smokes it was great. Real Brazilians doing what real Brazilians do!! This wasn’t the tourist crap I expected…there was music, dancing, and general chatting none of which I understand but it was cool nonetheless. It’s hot as hell so I pop over to the Suco Bar (Juice Bar) to quench the fire burning within. This is way the love affair began.
The barkeep dished up a national favourite: Açaí na tigela ("açaí in the bowl") or as I call it “Orgasm In A Bowl”. It’s commonly made with acai berry, strawberries, and bananas and topped with granola and bananas however there are many ways to make it.
Many people have described the taste of acai being that of chocolate covered raspberries but I don’t think so. To me it’s a cross between a blackberry and a strawberry with a dash of dark coco. Either way it’s damn good and extremely healthy, full of antioxidants.
I ended up parked at the bar every evening with my laptop in hand, chucking down as much of the stuff as my little stomach could handle. And since I’ve been back in the states I’ve been able to find frozen acai in my local whole food store; effectively further fueling my addiction. There are also juice bars that serve it but it’s in a smoothie form which for me was like lap dancing a corpse…stiff but lifeless.
I’d suggest you Google acai recipes and have a run at it yourself.
