I attended a writer’s workshop last night and the topic was coping with writer’s block and how to move past it. For the most part everyone agreed that stepping away from your work to clear your head for a while helps to get their creative juices flowing again. Many simply went to a quiet room and sat.
That’s all well and good but I tend to be a little different. I normally hop in my car and start driving while listening to music. A lot of my characters and scenes have their own theme sounds, it helps me to get into their heads and see the scene more clearly. For example:
Edward’s first sex scene: “When I get you alone”- Robin Thicke
Nick & Ali’s scene at the end of Seduce Me was written while listening to: Give Me Time- Chante Moore
Nick & Ali’s trip to
Sonya’s theme song: Hate on Me- Jill Scott
Edward from book 2 (not released yet): What Hurts the Most: Rascal Flatts
Ray & Phoebe (Change of Plans): Say Yes- Floetry
Sonya’s from book 2 (not released yet): Loving You Still- Tamia, No Air- Jordin Sparks
Charlie & Paula (Office Politics):
Those are just a few that came to mind. The point is this, music helps me become the character in my head so that it I can ‘feel’ them, feel what they are feeling and I can see through their eyes. So hope this helps anyone suffering with writer’s block.
