I’m about to come out of my skin. The lovely Eva received her grades today and earned all A’s. This isn’t abnormal for her however this school year was a bit challenging. She began the school year in Switzerland and then returned to the States to be closer to Greg.
You’ve heard me go on about their father/daughter bond so there’s no need for me to go into that melodrama.
Besides the quick change in school, she as also became an instant big sister to Clinton. Their relationship is a exercise in patience. You see Eva was attending school in Switzerland when Clinton came to live with us. So when she came home to visit they kinda circled each other like the gangs in Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” video for the first day, and then progressed on to a “Narnia” like curiosity.
Now they’re inseparable…their love is boundless; it reeks of optimism and makes me gag.
Anyway, we get her grades and she was glowing; well as much as a half WASP can which is to say not more. She has this shy-cocky smirk she inherited from Greg that I can’t reproduce to save my life. I caught a glimpse of this smirk when we were on our way to the market earlier.
I look over at her as she’d texting her grandma and realize she’s not a little girl. Today she looked different…more “something”. I whip out my camera and take a profile shot of her and captured that smirk. I showed her and Greg the shot when I uploaded it. The photo was perfect….no smile, no pose…just her smirking as she read her BlackBerry.
Greg asked her what she was reading when the picture was taken. She replied, “Christopher emailed to say congratulations.”
She showed us the email and that’s exactly what it said; one word, no more, no less. “Congratulations”
It’s at these times that I appreciate her inner strength. Most girls would’ve danced a jig if a boy paid them any attention, but not her. She’s caution and thoughtful. Maybe this was the “something” I saw in her face. She’s coming into her own yet still reaching back in search of our hands.
Her reply to Christopher: “Thanks. I’m having dinner with my folks. My dad wants to see your grades.”
I don’t think Greg and I have anything to wrong about. She’s developing just fine.

that's sweet..my kids are still young..but I am already seeing glimpses of independence, self confidence and humility. Just have to nurture it in the right way so i can feel confident and comfortable when they r older like you are with your daughter.

What a beautiful blog! For me, it's always shocking when I have one of those moments, a moment when I realize my children aren't little boys anymore. They're caught somewhere between childhood and being a young adult. Despite resembling my side of the family, my oldest is a carbon copy of his father in interests, demeanor and personality. He has always acted older beyond his years. When he was smaller, I found it amusing. Now, it saddens me because I feel as though his time at home is limited. I find myself counting the years before he goes off to college with each passing birthday. I take comfort in the fact that he is a smart and confident boy growing into a smart and confident man.

Thank Lydia. Yes, our kids are growing up far too fast. It's funny how we see ourselves in our children and one day out of the blue, we "see" them. Greg has had a touch time with this over the last year but yesterday was the first time I really really saw that "something". I can't tell you what it was. Maybe someone can explain.
Your boys are going to grow up to be awesome young men. We may need to arrange a marriage... |

LOL I'll make sure I continue raising them right so they can meet Greg's stringent standards. :)
