Magnolia is one of my favorite bakeries in NYC. If you’re familiar with them but haven’t tried their black bottom cupcakes don’t do it! They’re the instrument of Satan….they’ll have you white knuckling it through the boroughs! (Don’t ask)
My dear friend and fellow cupcake enthusiast figured my ass wasn’t wide enough and bought me the “More from Magnolia” cook book. I got a little misty-eyed, folks.
After finishing my work, I took a swing at the Brown Sugar Pecan Cake. I tweaked a few things but overall it’s a solid recipe…exactly what you’d expect from Magnolia. Andy, Greg’s business partner, and Greg ate half of it with strawberries they nicked off of BC. It’s gonna be hell on earth tomorrow morning.
To the New Yorkers reading this post, let me say this before I’m crucified:
Yes, I still go to the old Magnolia on Bleecker Street. The people aren't as stuck up.
Yes, I know there’s one closer in Rockefeller Center. That's Greg and BC's haunt. They give children free cupcakes for being patient.
And yes, the line is always ridiculous but it’s worth it. I can always tell when Greg orders from Grand Central or Rockefeller Center instead of trekking over to Bleecker Street.
If you’re ever in NYC, LA, or Dubai, be sure to check them out. Until then, I’ll post as I bake.
BTW, my girlfreind made the red velbet cupcakes last night and gave them the thumbs up. I'll post the recipe ASAP.

Coconut cream trumps black bottoms as my favorite

One of the new stores. *hiss*

My bad. *grins* Magnolia doesn't even pretend to be healthy. Them don'r skimp on anything..but that's what makes them different. To make matters worse, they're less expensive than other places. Hell, I pay six dollars for a bagel and cream cheese. Cupcakes, breads, & muffins at Magnolia...no more than three dollars. The last time we spent the weekend in NYC, our breakfast was over 90 bucks for just the two of us.
The cake I made tonight was (I say was because Andy polished off the rest) lighter than I expected. |

Your bad? *grin* The best cupcake around here is at Whole foods Store, they are as big as my head! They are soy too, doesn't make them any healthier, but they are great with coffee! I went to Einstein Bagels and they were kind of expensive. Sheesh, NYC is expensive! I need to learn how to bake, of course my thighs would be huge, but I would happy though. :D

The one on Bleecker street is the only one to go too. I will be heading there after work now. Damn there goes my diet.
Awww Tracy why do you spend $6 on a bagel and cream cheese. That should cost no more than a $1.75 or $3 if hot chocolate is included could be less with coffee. But I hate coffee and the smell (super taster gene is my excuse for hating coffee) |

Greg gets bagels from this little cut out...the guy makes his own cream cheese and yes, it's good but six dollars for a bagel and cheese? Please! Greg will run to the Magnolia in Grand Central if he's in a crunch and about to miss his train. The one on Bleecker is the best, though.
There might be something to the super taste gene and coffee. BC hates the smell of coffee but he'll drink tea. |

I think I'm the only person in New York who has never had Magnolia's. Well I'm going to the Shecky's event tomorrow so I guess I'll make a detour. My diet is already ruined from eating a huge plate of gnocchi *sigh* what's two or three cupcakes lol
Venieros or magnolia's? |

I love Veniero's also...especially their strawberry gelato & fruit tarts. But Magnolia's is my home. You should check them check them out.

After trying two of the recipes in two days, I'd give the book a thumbs up. The recipes can be easily tweaked to fit your taste.
Allysa gave Recipe Links permission to offer five recipes from the book on their site. I can't believe she gave up the vanilla cupcake recipe. That's why I love her! She doesn't give a damn. www.kitchenlink.com/c ookbooks/2005/0743246616_ 2.html |
