Explaining slavery to BC has backfired big time. Although I employed the simplest terms possible, in hindsight I see my mistakes.
The Tale:
Strangers from another place went to Africa, took people from their homes and told them there was a boat that would take them far away to work on farms.
The Africans didn’t want to go so the strangers forced them onboard and they never saw their families and homes again.
End of Tale
*Cue BC locking himself in the bathroom whenever the doorbell rings*
Forget the fact that he's blonde haired and blue eyed and slavery ended many moons ago. In the mind of a three year old, it's happening right then and there to them!
Hell, I tried!

Umm, Tracy! Did you describe the "African"? Did you tell that baby he's not an "African"? Did you tell that baby that the "African" is free now, such as it is? LOL!

Ha! We've tried everything but BC isn't buying it. We even watched "Amazing Grace" last night so he'd see the slaves were free.
Please! Once its in his head, that's it! The slave trade is alive and well...and coming for him! |

LOL! That is too funny. Poor BC he thinks he going to be forced into slavery. I'm sure a week or so once he see that they haven't come for him he'll realize he's fine and will be over it. It usually doesn't take long for kids to move on to the next thing.

He's gotten a little better--he's peeks through the curtains before he scurries off to the backroom. I give it another week.

Dori, we're screwed! We can't win. There are no blueprints for handling such things. I think my explanation was pretty cut and dry. *Bows*

*Stands up clapping* You did an excellent job. Maybe when other topics arise we can compare notes.

I've tried to explain this to my daughter who is six. It didn't go over too well and she kept asking her dad why light people hurt the brown people. I also read her a book about Rosa Parks a few months ago. She is still asking if the "clams" will come and burn our house down. I'll give her a couple more years, hopefully the explaining will go better.

Oh poor baby! Maybe slavery is something we should hold off on until they're older. Like most children, BC hasn't worked out the race game...he loves everyone so 'mean people' come in all shades.
