I was recently asked the difference between Erotica fiction and Porn. Never one to shy away from offering my opinion, here’s my verdict on this question.

To me erotica fiction is a catalyst for arousal. It engages the reader on a more cerebral level than a film would. As an erotic writer you’re asking the reader to picture the scene in their head while helping them custom make their fantasy. In porn this often gets lost in over production, sedative popping actors and a poor storylines (or lack there of).  In my stories for example, I build strong characters allowing the reader to get to know them on a personal level. From Ali’s sweet sexy vibe, Sonya’s sultry wickedness to Nick’s James Bond coolness, and Edward’s arrogant hotness…the reader will remember them. I had a male friend tell me that he loved Edward’s character so much that he started asking himself “What would Edward do?” and it boosted his confidence.

That’s the difference! Erotic fiction gives you something to take away from the experience other than self-loathing and crippling doubt as to your true sexually orientation. It opens your mind to new ideas of passion without opening you up to VD.

And erotica fiction isn’t just for females. I have several male subscribers who I love hearing from. For instance, ‘Zach’ (White) has always wanted to date a Black female however his conservative upbringing hindered this from happening. Porn movies didn’t satisfy his need because there was no real connection between the actors besides their genitals, so when he found interracial erotic fiction he fell in love with the genre. For Zach interracial fiction has allowed him to imagine being with Ali without turning his back on society. And who knows maybe one day he’ll feel more comfortable and just take the plunge…J     

In short, there is a clear difference between the two as far as I’m concerned which is why I love writing.
