For the love of meat on a stick! Sorry, I just had to throw that in after that conversation on Facebook. For the life of me I still can't figure out why you want to dip in chocolate but hey if it tickles your pickle.

Anyway, on the real subject at hand. The uproar behind this cover has been ongoing for a while. I think you have hit the issue spot on. When I saw the cover, I thought it was a marketing ploy (a bad one) but a marketing ploy nonetheless. I never thought race played a part in this despite the numerous times it was brought up. I simply believed it to be a cover that didn't depict the story at all making it a horrible one.

I have to be honest and say I was never tempted to read this story anyway because the blurb/info on the book (more bad marketing) didn't peak my interest in the least, the cover was just icing on the sausage on a stick, wrapped in a blueberry pancake, dipped in chocolate...

I don’t know how I feel about this topic. I think book marketing is very important and book covers do a lot to sell the book especially if the purchaser isn’t familiar with your work. I have gone to bookstores and had a cover catch my eye and purchased the book so I don’t take away from the importance of having a good cover. I don’t, however, believe that a catchy cover is the only determining factor.

With my own covers, I admit I don't know everything about book cover marketing--that's why I reach out to the people who do it for a living. I offer my opinion and allow them to tell me it's bullshit..:)

I don’t like covers that are too in your face with the race issue or ones falsely representing the content within. I picked up a book that was supposed to feature an interracial couple…about half way through I figured out that the couple was Black and their friends relationship was interracial, NOT THERE’S! I throw the book across the room and wrote a biting blog post about truth in advertising.

It burns me up!

Oh, you Americans are obsessed with your blueberry pancake covered meats on a stick covered in chocolate, aren't you? I kinda wish wish got them over here but I don't think they passed our food hygiene laws to get licensed here.... Damn... And we are the ones with bad teeth....

Tracy, you really put too much thought into the concept of cover design. Yes, there are rules you should follow to make sure your book is not only saleable but in terms of the romance market, not look boring or cliched. That's even before you get into the subject of covers passing a certain sense of quality or subtext. The most important thing most people miss is thinking of their market and making the designs too personal. This is an advantage that in some ways authors on major publishers have, in that the decision making is taken out of their hands but again... Unfortunately... These people have shit for brains and don't familiarize themselves with the contents they are attempting to package and market...
