Greg's preparing his departure from the firm. He’s hanging up his attorney hat and pouring his energy into his family’s foundation. Friday night, we were discussing our next move and began reflecting on the paradoxical nature of our life. For example:
I live in a large house in Greenwich
My sofa cost 150.00
We have a part-time chef & housekeeper
I grocery shop at Wal-Mart & Greg scrubs the kitchen and starts the wash nightly
I own a collectors’ bottle of wine worth over a 300.00 dollars
Greg makes his own beer in the basement
I have a pair of unworn 700.00 boots in my closet (comp swag)
I almost cried when I found a pair of 8.00 Converse at Target
My friend owns one of NYC’s best consignment shops
The staff at Goodwill and I are on first name basis
We fly NetJets
We bring our own fried chicken and hot sauce on-board
We’re unabashed, card carrying Kinksters
Missionary Rock!
Greg owns an Aston (a gift from the firm)
He rides the train to work
We have a pimped out theater system
…that plays VHS
In a way, our parents and Grandparents deserve a lot of credit for the above. There was always a balance, though the words to describe this balance escape me. I guess it’s like Momma Ames says, “It’s hard to take yourself too seriously when you’re standing knee deep in cow manure.”
Whatever it is, we’re the better for it.

I love it! You're grounded in reality, that's all :-)

Deborah, that I can't argue with. Do you know one of our neighbors was ashamed of having to mowing their own lawn? Now, I'm not trying to mow the back forty but I wouldn't be ashamed to do so. People really need to get a grip on reality.

Tracy you gave credit where it’s due, to you and Greg’s parents and grandparents. What I really dislike are the kids who, from their parents, have the attitude that they are better than others because of the “status” of the family.
A VCR lol that reminds me of my sister she’s holding on to that things for dear life-she actually got it repaired a few months back. Luckily she knew the guy or she would have been better off buying a new one |

Self entitled children bug the heck out of me. And you're right, it is learned behavior. These parents preach humility to their kids but their actions speak differently. Drive me nuts. The family's influence is under rated.
Your sister sounds like she has her head on straight, lol. I'm not giving up my VCR for anyone. |

Oh No! Don't tell me you guys listen to missionary rock music! Lol. Jk. As everyone have said you're both grounded and have a good balance. If you're a hard worker there's nothing wrong with rewarding yourself. Some people just need to realize that excess of anything is bad for them.

I love balance it's awesome. We live in a 900 sq. ft 1 bedroom apartment close to downtown Seattle (saving for a significant down payment for a house). Matt has decided to buy two flat screen televisions, one is 52 inches, the other is 48 inches, one in the living room, one in the den area and you can hear them each clearly in the other room LOL. He just got a new job after 1 interview and by sending in his resume with no cover letter (it's the perk of having a career in the no. 4 field that is in demand, he's an engineer). So we're keeping our cars, his 12 year old Subaru and my 6 year old Toyota till the wheels fall off. We're about to have a wedding next summer with 50 guests in his parents backyard their modest lake house in Central Washington. Yea, balance is key, it keeps you grounded. I love Saks but man Target is the bomb.

Shut up! I have a Subaru. I traded in my 1997 for a 2009 two yrs ago...and we just upgraded to a 2011. It's all we drive during the winter. I'm not kidding. Everything else is parked in the stalls until Feb. I drop Greg off at the train station and he rides the train to work. Lady, keep those cars especially since they're paid for. My mom always said, "Keep something in your driveway with no payment on it because you never know."
Your wedding plans sound reasonable. Big over blown weddings are a waste. The one I'm putting together is very much like the one I did for my penny-pinching brother. I'm glad Matt has found a job...Go Matt! I'm a reformed engineer so I totally understand his love of big tellies! Again, Go Matt! |

I just drove the Subaru for the first time today, he's driving my car to work it gets better gas mileage. I wish they would get a train that goes to out his job in this city, it would help. But I tell it is so wonderful to have fully paid autombiles, that's a bill I always hated especially when I thought that thing was losing value everyday LOL. And your mom sounds like a wise woman.
Ah the wedding, thank goodness my sister in law is starting an event planning business, she's awesome at it so she's doing all this planning as a gift. Because I so know nothing about planning an event, when I look at stuff it makes my head hurt LOL. Ah you engineers, you're a breed apart it's very interesting to be in a relationship with you all, you're unlike anyone I ever met. He's so detailed and lord can he ask a lot of detailed questions, goodness gracious. But he's great at handling business, so he handles all the business in this house, it's so nice. I don't have to be the man anymore like in my 1st marriage LOL. Ya'll and them dang televisons. |
